Accomplish anything When there are more than 100 applications competing for your attention, it can be difficult on mobile devices. It’s easy to get distracted, whether it’s because of a work call or a random app constantly notifying you. This doesn’t even consider the casual games you keep on the home screen. To solve this distraction problem, the focus mode in iOS 15 is Apple’s attempt to help people regain control of their devices.
“I like that I can have several options that can be locked in different ways. So, for example, I have a recording focus that only allows my wife’s text messages and our VP of sales Slack message to pass through me,” said Repeater FM Co-founder Mike Hurley. “I also have an exercise focus, which will block everything except the active app. I set up an automation in the Shortcuts app, and this automation is triggered every time I start a small part of the exercise-so if I’m walking and it doesn’t turn off during certain exercises.”
This iOS 15 Focus feature is an extension of “Do Not Disturb”. Previously, focusing on a specific task meant a full suspension of notifications. Now, iOS devices can be configured more finely. This should make it more useful to more people. Nevertheless, Focus can be overwhelming at first glance, so let’s break it down.

After installing iOS 15, the easiest way to start using Focus is to go to the Settings app. Apple has prepared some basic modes, including “Do Not Disturb”, “Work” and “Personal”. “Do Not Disturb” will block everything, but it can be changed. Work and Personal will suggest certain people and apps to allow notifications, but I found that these suggestions mainly revolve around recent usage.
In the focus section, there is a plus sign in the upper right corner to add your own custom focus area. Here, Apple also has some suggestions, such as driving, games, exercise, reading and mindfulness.
After selecting a focus area, there will be several options to configure to make it completely set. First, select who is allowed to send messages and calls when the mode is active. Second, select the applications (if any) that are allowed to pass. Applications can also filter based on whether they are time sensitive. After setting a new focus mode, more settings will be available.
